The CFTC is preparing a rulemaking path if Congress does not pass the Clarity Act
CFTC Chair Michael Selig told staff to prepare crypto regulations that the agency could advance if Congress does not pass the Clarity Act. The instruction creates an administrative route alongside the legislative process, but it does not mean a final rule has been adopted. Agency rulemaking can define how derivatives venues and market intermediaries operate within existing authority. It cannot settle every question that a statute would address across the CFTC, SEC and banking regulators. For DeFi, the practical details will be whether rules reach interfaces, developers or only regulated access points. Source: Decrypt, published August 20 at 18:44 UTC.
Binance opened controlled crypto trading access for AI agents
Binance introduced Agent OS, a system that lets AI agents read market data, execute trades and make payments within permissions set by the user. The access controls are the important part. Automated agents can reduce execution friction, but a compromised instruction, excessive allowance or faulty trading rule can turn speed into loss. Users still carry the risk of the strategy, the credential scope and the venue. Revocable permissions, transaction limits and clear audit logs become core controls when software can act without a confirmation screen for every order. The product brings agentic finance closer to live exchange accounts, where security boundaries matter more than a polished interface. Source: Cointelegraph, published August 20 at 20:26 UTC.
Optimism redirected 546.9 million OP from future airdrops to ecosystem growth
Optimism governance approved moving 546.9 million OP that had been reserved for future airdrops into an ecosystem growth fund. The change turns a distribution reserve into capital that governance can direct toward adoption and development. That may give the ecosystem more flexibility, while also increasing the importance of grant criteria, disclosure and treasury oversight. Token allocation decisions affect more than headline supply: they change who controls incentives, how quickly tokens can enter circulation and whether spending produces durable network activity.
