Whale deposits to exchanges hit a 2026 extreme as CryptoQuant flags volatility risk into the July 4 weekend.

The Wire PM — July 3, 2026

Whales are moving coins to exchanges, and CryptoQuant says buckle up Bitcoin deposits to exchanges climbed to nearly 49,000 BTC in a single day on June 30, a reading CryptoQuant calls "a rare extreme" seen only four other times this year. The average deposit size roughly doubled, from about 1 BTC to about 2 BTC, which points to large holders rather than retail. Ether inflows topped 1.25 million ETH the same week, and altcoin deposit transactions hit nearly 45,000 a day, the highest in two months. Every prior spike of this size preceded a burst of volatility, and with liquidity thinning into the July 4 weekend, today's rebound above $62,000 sits on soft ground. Russia says the digital ruble is ready for its September 1 launch Bank of Russia governor Elvira Nabiullina told a central bank conference that "everything is ready" for widespread use of the digital ruble. From September 1, the country's 12 systemically important banks must offer digital ruble accounts, transfers and payments, and large retailers will be required to accept it. The central bank is also discussing stablecoins for international settlements, but only as a complement to the CBDC. A G20 economy forcing its largest banks onto a CBDC in eight weeks is the biggest live test yet of state-run digital money. Source: The Block, published July 3.

Spotify tells Kalshi and Polymarket to drop its logo after a rigged music market Spotify identified and removed more than 500,000 artificial streams that pushed Malcolm Todd's "Earrings" up its US chart, but not before the inflated numbers settled a Kalshi market on June's most-streamed song that drew $3 million in volume, per Bloomberg. Spotify has now asked both Kalshi and Polymarket to remove its branding and clarify there is no affiliation. It is the first open clash between prediction markets and the platforms whose data settles their bets. For DeFi readers this is a familiar problem wearing new clothes: when money rides on a data feed, the feed becomes the attack surface. Source: The Block, published July 3.

Zcash's Ironwood upgrade nears testnet with no new bugs found Zcash developers say security testing ahead of the Ironwood upgrade has surfaced no new serious flaws, with testnet activation imminent and mainnet targeted for late July at block 3,417,100. Ironwood introduces a new shielded pool that lets users independently verify ZEC's circulating supply. The upgrade is damage control as much as roadmap: a counterfeiting bug in the Orchard pool, latent for roughly four years, was disclosed in May and cut ZEC by more than half in 48 hours, from above $600 to $255. Confidence, not code, is what Ironwood needs to restore. Source: Decrypt, published July 3.
