JPMorgan likens yield-bearing stablecoins to shadow banking as BNY and Circle deepen USDC rails, BitMine pushes its ETH treasury to 5.7M, and SOL leads the majors into the quarter's close

The Wire PM — June 29, 2026

JPMorgan Calls Yield-Bearing Stablecoins "Shadow Banking" JPMorgan executives argued that stablecoin innovation drifts into shadow banking the moment issuers start paying yield to holders. The framing matters because the line they want to draw runs straight through the product category a yields desk watches most closely. A non-yield stablecoin is a payment token. A yield stablecoin is a deposit that competes with a bank, without the bank's capital rules, which is exactly why the carry exists in the first place. The bank's warning is also a tell: the spread that makes synthetic dollars attractive is the spread regulators will eventually price. (The Block)

BNY and Circle Deepen the USDC Plumbing BNY, the world's largest custodian, expanded its partnership with Circle to add mint and burn capabilities for USDC through its Digital Asset Custody platform, and said it plans to support additional stablecoins. Custody and issuance plumbing rarely moves price, but it moves where dollar liquidity can sit. The more institutional money can mint and redeem USDC inside the same custodian it already trusts, the deeper the pool that funds on-chain lending becomes. Today the deepest liquid USDC market on Solana, Jupiter Lend, pays 5.17% across roughly $396 million in deposits. (The Block)

BitMine Lifts Its Ethereum Treasury to 5.7M ETH BitMine added 27,084 ETH last week to reach 5.70 million coins worth about $8.9 billion, putting it at 94% of its stated target of holding 5% of ether's supply, and the company joined the Russell 1000. It kept buying through a week that dragged ether lower, the mirror image of Strategy halting its bitcoin purchases the same week. Treasury accumulation on this scale is structural demand that does not care about the daily candle, and it is the kind of bid that quietly tightens the float behind every staking yield. CZ Says Binance's MiCA Bid Was "Fully Compliant" Binance founder CZ said the exchange's EU MiCA application was fully compliant and near approval before unnamed political forces intervened. A licensed Binance inside MiCA would be one of the largest single gateways for European users into regulated yield and stablecoin products, so the holdup is a distribution question as much as a legal one. Whatever the reason for the delay, the pattern across the bloc is the same one BIS flagged this week: access to dollar yield in Europe keeps getting decided in committee rooms rather than markets.
