Coinbase's Base launches MCP gateway letting AI agents execute DeFi trades on Ethereum L2

The Wire PM — May 27, 2026

Coinbase's Base Launches MCP Gateway for AI-Powered DeFi Base, Coinbase's Ethereum L2, shipped an MCP server that connects AI clients like ChatGPT and Claude directly to on-chain DeFi. Users can prompt an AI agent to swap tokens, supply lending vaults on Morpho or Moonwell, or trade perps on Avantis. Transactions still require manual approval through a Base Account before any funds move. Private keys stay outside the MCP server, which Base says reduces phishing and domain-hijacking risk compared to traditional web frontends. The launch signals a broader trend: DeFi protocols competing not just on yields or UX, but on how easily AI agents can interact with their contracts. Source: CoinDesk, The Block.

Western Union's USDPT Stablecoin Is Live on Solana Western Union confirmed that USDPT, its USD-backed stablecoin issued through Anchorage Digital Bank, is now live on Solana. The token handles 24/7 cross-border settlement between Western Union agents, replacing batch-processed correspondent banking rails with on-chain finality. A consumer product called "Stable by Western Union" will roll out across 40+ countries later this year, giving retail users direct access to the token. For Solana's DeFi ecosystem, USDPT adds another institutional-grade stablecoin alongside USDC and PYUSD. Source: Western Union IR, Decrypt.

RWA Market Tops $34.5B as Private Credit Takes the Lead Tokenized real-world assets (excluding stablecoins) crossed $34.5 billion in May, up over 100% year-on-year. The shift: private credit has overtaken tokenized Treasuries as the largest non-stablecoin RWA segment for the first time. Ethereum holds roughly 60% of total RWA value, led by BlackRock's BUIDL fund and Ondo Finance. JPMorgan filed on May 12 for a second tokenized fund (ticker JLTXX) on Ethereum, following its December 2025 MONY launch. Source: crypto.news, news.bitcoin.com.

Warsh has described Bitcoin as "an important asset that can help inform policymakers" and opposes a central bank digital currency, favoring private stablecoins instead. Despite the pro-crypto signal from the top of the Fed, BTC has stayed range-bound near $76K as rising Treasury yields pull capital toward AI-sector trades. Source: CryptoBriefing, CoinMarketCap.
