Dankrad Feist Proposes $1B Organization to Replace Ethereum Foundation

The Ethereum Foundation exodus has reached a tipping point. At least eight senior researchers have departed the organization in 2026, with five leaving in May alone, including consensus contributors Carl Beek and Julian Ma. Now former EF researcher Dankrad Feist has proposed creating an entirely new institution funded with at least $1 billion in ETH, sustained through staking fee revenue, with a board explicitly tasked with protecting ETH's competitive position. Feist argued the figure is "very reasonable for an ecosystem with $250B market cap." The proposal has divided the community. Some see it as a necessary pivot from ideology to competitiveness. Others warn it would turn Ethereum into "another corporate chain." Meanwhile, the EF has not publicly addressed the departures.

Western Union USDPT Stablecoin Now Live on Solana

Western Union's USD-backed stablecoin USDPT launched on Solana this month, issued through Anchorage Digital Bank, the first federally regulated crypto bank in the U.S. The token enables 24/7 cross-border settlement between Western Union's global agent network spanning 360,000+ payout locations across 200+ countries. A consumer-facing product called "Stable by Western Union" is expected to roll out in 40+ countries later this year. For Solana, this is one of the largest traditional finance integrations to date, bringing real-world payment infrastructure on-chain.

Verus-Ethereum Bridge Drained for $11.6M

Cross-chain bridges remain DeFi's weakest link. On May 18, attackers exploited the Verus-Ethereum bridge for $11.58M, draining 1,625 ETH, 103.6 tBTC, and 147,000 USDC before converting everything into 5,402 ETH. The root cause was a validation gap: the bridge verified Merkle proofs and notary signatures correctly but failed to check that the value claimed on Ethereum matched what was actually exported from the Verus chain. The same class of vulnerability hit Wormhole and Nomad in 2022. On-chain analysis links the attacker to the operator behind the March 2025 1inch Fusion V1 incident. Total DeFi losses in 2026 now exceed $840M.

Solana Developer Growth Outpaces Ethereum

A May 2026 report shows Solana has surpassed Ethereum in new developer signups, with active developers up 45% quarter-over-quarter. Developer share has risen to 23%. Meanwhile, Solana's SOL-denominated TVL crossed 80M SOL in Q1, an all-time high, even as dollar-denominated TVL sits near $5.5B (down 56% from the August 2025 peak). The Jito Foundation and Solana Company announced a strategic partnership to expand institutional infrastructure across Asia-Pacific. And Alpenglow, the consensus upgrade that could cut finality from 12.8 seconds to roughly 150 milliseconds, remains on track for mainnet in Q3 2026.

Bitcoin Rangebound Below $77K as Derivatives Market Stalls

BTC has been stuck between $76K and $78K this week, trading at $76,571 as of Saturday morning. The derivatives market shows stagnation, with capital rotating into altcoins, particularly tokens linked to AI, HYPE, and privacy. On the macro side, the U.S. Department of Commerce is channeling over $2B into quantum computing infrastructure through the CHIPS and Science Act, signing letters of intent with nine companies. The long-term implications for cryptographic security are worth watching, though practical quantum threats to Bitcoin remain years away.
