Verus-Ethereum Bridge Exploited for $11.5M, Eighth Bridge Attack This Month
Cross-chain infrastructure keeps bleeding. On May 18, an attacker drained $11.58 million from the Verus-Ethereum bridge after exploiting a validation flaw that let the contract release assets on Ethereum without confirming backing on the Verus side. The haul included 103.6 tBTC, 1,625 ETH, and 147,000 USDC, all quickly swapped to 5,402 ETH. The wallet was funded via Tornado Cash 14 hours before the attack. Peckshield now counts eight bridge exploits through mid-May, totaling $328.6 million. The pattern is clear: bridges remain the weakest link in multi-chain DeFi. Source: The Block, CoinDesk.
CLARITY Act Clears Senate Committee, Heads to Full Floor Vote
The biggest crypto regulation bill in U.S. history passed the Senate Banking Committee on May 14 by a 15-9 vote. The 309-page Digital Asset Market Clarity Act would formally split oversight between the SEC and CFTC, giving the industry the regulatory framework it has lobbied for since 2021. Two Democrats, Ruben Gallego (AZ) and Angela Alsobrooks (MD), crossed party lines to vote yes. Opposition comes from banks, unions, and law enforcement citing consumer protection risks. The bill now needs 60 votes on the Senate floor. If it passes, SOL and other major tokens could see their commodity status formalized. Source: CNBC, CoinDesk.
Ronin Completes Migration to Ethereum L2, Slashes Token Issuance 89%
Ronin, the blockchain behind Axie Infinity and Pixels, completed its hard fork on May 12 and now operates as a full Ethereum Layer 2 on the OP Stack. The move brings Ethereum-level security to Ronin's 2+ million gaming users. Alongside the migration, RON token annual issuance dropped from 45 million to 5 million, cutting inflation from over 20% to under 1%. Passive staking is being replaced by a "Proof of Distribution" model that rewards builders based on TVL, gas usage, and user retention. Ronin joins Base, Celo, and Fraxtal as chains that gave up independent consensus to settle on Ethereum. Source: CoinDesk, CryptoTimes.
BlackRock Staked ETH ETF Pulls $100M on Day One
Institutional appetite for Ethereum staking yields is real. BlackRock's staked ETH ETF attracted $100 million in inflows on its first day of trading, while exchange supply fell to a yearly low of 14.9 million ETH. Over 34 million ETH (28% of total supply) is now staked, generating 3.5-4.5% annualized yields through Lido, Rocket Pool, and direct validators. The staking ETF wave follows Grayscale's launch on NYSE Arca earlier this month. For yield-focused investors, staked ETH is becoming a mainstream fixed-income proxy. Source: CoinGecko, ainvest.
Solana's Alpenglow Consensus Overhaul Hits Public Testnet
Solana's largest-ever consensus upgrade is now live on a community test cluster. Alpenglow replaces Proof of History and TowerBFT with two new components, Votor and Rotor, targeting transaction finality of around 150 milliseconds, down from 12.8 seconds. Co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko says the upgrade validates Solana's original design thesis. Mainnet launch is targeted for Q3 2026. If it ships on schedule, Solana would have sub-second finality comparable to centralized systems while maintaining decentralization. Source: CryptoNews, CoinDesk.
Galaxy Digital and Sharplink Launch $125M Onchain Yield Fund
Galaxy Digital partnered with Sharplink to manage a new onchain yield fund, starting with $100 million from Sharplink's staked ETH treasury plus $25 million from Galaxy. The fund will deploy across DeFi lending and restaking protocols. It signals growing institutional comfort with onchain yield strategies beyond simple staking. Source: ainvest.
Bitcoin ETFs Absorb $2.44B in April, BTC Holds $77K
April 2026 was the strongest month for spot Bitcoin ETF inflows this year, with $2.44 billion in net new capital. BlackRock's IBIT continues to dominate, pulling $335 million on a single day in early May. Bitcoin is trading around $76,985 today, consolidating below the $82K high it hit earlier this month. The ETF bid provides a floor, but macro uncertainty and geopolitical tension are capping upside for now. Source: Bitcoin Magazine, Intellectia.
