Bitcoin Drops Below $77K as Geopolitical Tensions Trigger $657M in Liquidations

Bitcoin extended a four-day losing streak on Monday, falling to $76,770 and triggering $657 million in crypto liquidations over 24 hours. Long positions took the worst of it. The sell-off came after weekend U.S. drone strikes linked to escalating Iran tensions, compounded by hot inflation data and a reversal of ETF flows. Weekly crypto ETP outflows topped $1 billion, ending a six-week positive streak. BTC is down roughly 5% on the week. Analysts point to macro headwinds rather than any structural shift in institutional demand. (Sources: news.bitcoin.com, Yahoo Finance, CoinDCX)

Verus-Ethereum Bridge Exploited for $11.5M

An attacker drained the Verus-Ethereum bridge on May 18, extracting 103.6 tBTC, 1,625 ETH, and 147,000 USDC. The stolen assets were swapped into 5,402 ETH and the attacker's wallet was traced to a Tornado Cash seed funded 14 hours before the exploit. Security firm Blockaid identified the root cause: a missing source-amount validation in the bridge's checkCCEValues function. They noted a ten-line Solidity fix would have prevented the entire drain. Peckshield now counts eight bridge exploits in May totaling $328.6 million. Bridge security remains one of DeFi's most persistent vulnerabilities. (Sources: CoinDesk, The Defiant, news.bitcoin.com)

CLARITY Act Clears Senate Committee, Faces Long Road Ahead

The Senate Banking Committee voted 15-9 to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, with Democratic Senators Gallego and Alsobrooks breaking ranks to join all Republicans. The bill would create a regulatory framework for digital assets and is the crypto industry's top legislative priority. Significant opposition remains from banks, unions, and law enforcement groups who argue the bill lacks sufficient consumer protections and anti-money-laundering provisions. Democrats are pushing for conflict-of-interest provisions targeting government officials with crypto ties. The bill still needs full Senate and House approval before reaching the president's desk. Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade Targets 150ms Finality

Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko confirmed the Alpenglow consensus upgrade is live on a community test cluster with mainnet targeted for Q2 2026. The upgrade would cut transaction finality from roughly 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds. It is the most significant consensus change since Solana's launch. On-chain volumes continue above $500 billion and stablecoin supply sits at $14 billion, though SOL's price has struggled. The token is down nearly 11% over the past week, trading around $84. Ronin Completes Migration to Ethereum L2 via OP Stack

Ronin, the blockchain behind Axie Infinity and Pixels, completed its migration from an independent sidechain to a full Ethereum Layer 2 on May 12. The hard fork caused about 10 hours of downtime but was executed cleanly. RON's annual inflation rate drops from over 20% to under 1% under a new Proof of Distribution model that rewards active builders instead of passive stakers. The migration puts Ronin within the Optimism Superchain ecosystem alongside Base, Zora, and others. RON has rallied 30% over the past month on the news. Ethereum Ecosystem: Aave Restores WETH LTV, Hegota Upgrade on the Horizon

Aave restored wrapped ether loan-to-value ratios across six networks, reversing emergency restrictions imposed after April's $230 million exploit. Separately, the Hegota upgrade is scheduled for H2 2026, introducing Verkle Trees to enable stateless clients. This would reduce validator hardware requirements and open the door to lighter node participation. ETH trades near $2,100 with weak momentum (RSI at 34). Meanwhile, Japan's SBI and Rakuten announced plans for regulated crypto trusts, and CME/Nasdaq will launch the CME Crypto Index Futures on June 8. (Sources: CryptoNews, CoinMarketCap, Fortune)
