Solana's Alpenglow Consensus Overhaul Goes Live on Testnet
The biggest consensus change in Solana's history is now running on a community validator cluster. Anza activated Alpenglow on May 11, replacing TowerBFT with two new components: Votor (a lightweight voting protocol that finalizes blocks in one or two rounds) and Rotor (an optimized block propagation layer using erasure coding). The target: 150ms confirmation times, down from 12.8 seconds. Alpenglow also removes Proof of History and on-chain vote transactions, which currently account for roughly 75% of all Solana transactions. Co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko says mainnet could land as soon as next quarter. Source: CoinDesk.
SpaceX Pre-IPO Perps Launch on Hyperliquid
Trade.xyz deployed the first pre-IPO perpetual futures contract on @HyperliquidX, offering synthetic exposure to SpaceX common stock. The SPCX-USDC pair launched at a $150 reference price (implying a $1.78T valuation), spiked to $216 within hours, and settled around $203. Open interest hit $12.3M in the first session. Because the contract is synthetic, there are no actual SpaceX shares involved, sidestepping private-market restrictions. Hyperliquid now commands roughly 70% of all on-chain perp volume, with monthly throughput exceeding $180B. Source: CoinDesk.
Bitcoin ETFs Post $1B Weekly Outflow, Snapping Six-Week Streak
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a $1 billion net outflow for the week ending May 15, the sharpest reversal since January. The selloff peaked on May 13 with $635M leaving in a single day. Trigger: April CPI came in at 3.8% (highest since September 2023), while PPI jumped to 6%, pushing back rate-cut expectations. BlackRock's IBIT and Fidelity's FBTC bore the brunt. Most analysts frame it as a healthy consolidation, not a trend reversal, noting that cumulative 2026 inflows remain firmly positive. Source: CryptoTimes.
CLARITY Act Clears Senate Banking Committee 15-9
The crypto market-structure bill passed its Senate committee hurdle in a largely party-line vote, with Democratic Sens. Gallego and Alsobrooks joining all Republicans. Over 130 amendments were filed ahead of the markup, most targeting stablecoins, DeFi developer liability, and ethics provisions related to political figures' crypto involvement. Key rejected amendments: a CBDC ban from Sen. Hagerty and a stablecoin yield restriction from Sen. Reed. The bill now heads to the full Senate floor. Source: CNBC.
Jane Street Rotates From Bitcoin to Ethereum ETFs
Q1 2026 filings show Jane Street cut its BlackRock Bitcoin Trust position by 71% (from $1B+ to $225M) while nearly doubling Ethereum ETF exposure, adding roughly $82M across BlackRock and Fidelity ether funds. The rotation coincides with broader institutional interest in ETH staking products. BlackRock's staking-enabled ETHB product, launched in March, has accelerated ETH ETF inflows to $11.6B cumulative. Roughly 30% of all ETH is now staked across 1.1M validators. Source: CryptoNews.
Ethereum's Glamsterdam Upgrade Targets June, Could Triple L1 Throughput
Ethereum's next hard fork, Glamsterdam, is scheduled for June 2026 and aims to triple layer-1 throughput through parallel execution and higher gas limits. The upgrade is followed by Hegota in H2 2026, which introduces Verkle Trees to drastically reduce storage requirements for node operators. The two upgrades together represent Ethereum's most aggressive scaling push on the base layer since The Merge. Source: CoinMarketCap.
